Periodontal (Gum) Disease
If you have gum disease, you are not alone. Many adults in the United States are affected by some form of this disease. Gum disease, or periodontal disease, can range from simple cases of gum inflammation to more serious cases, which can result in tooth loss. At Barfield Dental, Dr. Lee and his experienced staff have extensive experience providing effective gum treatment.
Symptoms of gum disease are often not noticeable until the disease has advanced. They include:
- Swollen, Red Gums
- Tender or Bleeding Gums
- Pain When Chewing
- Loose or Sensitive Teeth
- Persistent Bad Breath
Gum Disease Treatment
The main goal of gum disease treatment is controlling the infection. The frequency and types of treatment may vary, depending on the extent of your gum disease. However, any type of gum disease treatment requires that you maintain good daily care at home. In addition, modifying certain behaviors, such as stopping the use of tobacco, may be suggested as a way to improve the outcome of treatment.
Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)
Scaling and root planing are often referred to as deep cleaning. Scaling is when tartar and plaque are scraped from above and below the gum line. Root planing eliminates rough spots on the tooth root where germs gather, removing bacteria that contributes to gum disease.
If you have gum disease, the good news is that it often can be treated successfully.
